Subject:Child Sexual Abuse Preventative Measures/Systematic approach
Hi Medical Science Society,
My name is Sally Mei, and I am a first-year medical student (M1) at the Jacobs School of Medicine seeking research opportunities for my Health Systems Scholarly Project.
My interests focus on preventive approaches to child sexual abuse, relevant health and educational policies, and systemic factors that contribute to missed or delayed identification of children experiencing abuse—particularly among children with repeated encounters across healthcare, educational, or social service systems without timely intervention.
I am especially interested in examining barriers to early detection, prevention, and intervention, as well as opportunities to improve outcomes through policy- and health system–level approaches. I was wondering whether you currently have any ongoing projects in this area that I might be able to contribute to.
For this project, I am open to qualitative or quantitative research, systematic reviews, or participation in summer research programs. If a project aligned with these interests is not currently available, I would also be open to pursuing the Dean’s Summer Research Program at my school or initiating an independent project and collecting my own data or using secondary data. In that case, documentation confirming Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval would be required by March 3, 2026.
As I do not yet have experience leading an independent research project, I would greatly value mentorship in this field, particularly in refining a research question and identifying appropriate methodologies. I would be very grateful if you would consider mentoring me or connecting me with relevant opportunities.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best regards,
Sally Mei
